Fire-rated construction uses 5/8" Type X board, which has a glass-fiber-reinforced core that resists burn-through, or Type C, an upgraded core specified for certain higher-rated ceiling and floor assemblies. We hang the exact type the assembly calls for rather than substituting standard board. Using the specified panel is the difference between a wall that holds its rating and one that only looks the part.
